Our Cows
Our Blue Grey Cows
We’re lucky to share our fields with three beautiful Blue Grey cattle – one steer (our only boy!) and two heifers, all a year old. The girls will be visiting the bull next year, and we’re excited to (hopefully!) welcome some calves to the herd.
About the Breed
Blue Grey cattle are a traditional British breed, created by crossing a Whitebred Shorthorn with a Galloway. This mix produces the stunning mottled blue-grey coat the breed is famous for, as well as a hardy and gentle nature. They are well-suited to grazing on rougher pastures and thrive in low-input, sustainable farming systems.
Fun Facts
-
Most Blue Greys are shades of silver and slate, but our steer decided to be different – he’s a striking ginger boy who loves standing out from the crowd.
-
Blue Greys are known for their calm, friendly personalities, often coming over for a scratch or a sniff at visitors.
-
The breed is prized for being excellent mothers – something we hope to see in our heifers next year.
-
They thrive on grass alone and handle Scottish weather like pros.
-
Their Shorthorn heritage gives them a reputation for delicious, tender beef.
Whether they’re grazing quietly, coming to say hello, or showing off their unique colours, our Blue Greys are a real highlight for visitors and a much-loved part of our farm family.
